We are facinated about the way businesses are recognised. People can form an opinion about a place they have never visited or a product they have never held. All it takes is the right name, a typeface and a considered colour palette. A few seemingly ordinary elements brought together, can shape how we perceive a business we don’t know.
We make assumptions about quality, price, personality and credibility without having any evidence. This is not a particularly modern phenomenon. For centuries, merchants used distinctive signs and symbols to make their establishments recognisable. Later, as mass production brought competing products onto the same shelves, visual identity became an increasingly important way to distinguish one business from another.
The circumstances have changed considerably. The underlying challenge has not. People still need reasons to notice, recognise and choose one business over another. Only now, those decisions are often made in a matter of seconds, on a screen, among countless alternatives.
And this is where branding becomes interesting. A visual identity cannot manufacture a reputation out of nothing. But it can establish expectations, communicate a point of view and give people a reason to look more closely.
